Greetings!

I have a working install of Debian Etch over here and it's installed on an Powerbook G3 "Lombard" and the version of VLC which is part of Debian Etch is still version 0.8.6a and I'm wondering why you people haven't done a package of version 0.8.6e yet?

Because Etch is stable release, I guess. We keep old one intentinally
for the sake of stability.

http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=vlc&searchon=names&suite=all&section=all

Package vlc

    * sarge (oldstable) (graphics): multimedia player for all audio and video formats
      0.8.1.svn20050314-1sarge3: alpha amd64 arm hppa i386 ia64 m68k mips mipsel powerpc s390 sparc
    * etch (stable) (graphics): multimedia player and streamer
      0.8.6-svn20061012.debian-5.1+etch2 [security]: alpha amd64 arm hppa i386 ia64 mips mipsel powerpc s390 sparc
    * etch-m68k (graphics): multimedia player and streamer
      0.8.6-svn20061012.debian-5: m68k
    * lenny (testing) (graphics): multimedia player and streamer
      0.8.6.c-6+lenny5 [security]: alpha amd64 arm hppa i386 ia64 mips mipsel powerpc s390 sparc
      0.8.6.c-6: armel
    * sid (unstable) (graphics): multimedia player and streamer
      0.8.6.e-2.3+b1: amd64 i386 mips mipsel
      0.8.6.e-2.3: alpha arm armel hppa ia64 m68k powerpc s390 sparc
      0.8.6.e-2.1 [debports]: kfreebsd-amd64 kfreebsd-i386

So Debian is quite up-to-date :)

I'm thinking of maybe trying to compile the source on my own, but I don't want to break the current installation of VLC, so, so far I haven't tried it.

If you want to use very latest softwares (even with some trouble), use
 * testing (now lenny) or
 * unstable (sid)

I sense that you need to get to know How Debian operates a bit more.

Good luck.

No. I've been using Debian since 1999 so I know "a little" about how Debian works. Debian is the best distribution available according to my opinion.

I have been having thoughts about compiling it from source instead, but I'm only going to do it if I notice any speed improvements from the old one and on my other system: Windows XP SP2 I can't notice any difference in performance compared to the old one, so I don't think I'm gonna do it this time.
