The last time I've checked etckeeper it didn't track the original files and it placed the git directory in /etc. About the second one I'm not shure it is really useful, but the first one gives you the possibility to see what you've changed: etcgit diff master local_config And the merge of the new config files is done by git, which might result in fewer conflicts than the merge done by dpkg.
