Most try, to the point of doing a kill -9 if the daemon doesn't go away
easily. But if it doesn't die even with a kill -9 (say, kernel bug,
filesystem hang, or someone doing kill -STOP), or if the service *isn't* a
daemon and cannot for some reason be shut down...
