Agreed.

No idea. But while at it, why don't we provide Upstream-Version as well?
(that's the version string minus any -[^-]*$ (extended regexp notation).
That will give us a full suite of substitution vars for this stuff, and
debian/rules scripts will not need to provide their own implementations of
them.
