Unlikely. It looks to a be a completely different program than the
original gallery that happens to be run by the same author and have a
similar name. The G2 Developer's Guide screams "second system" (ref
Brooks). They're still releasing updates to the 1.x series. There's no
sign of an upgrade path yet.

There are are several web photo albums in Debian. Another one that's
likely to be popular and well supported long term won't hurt.
