Which ones don't support 'lpr' ? The LPR varients obviously do, and CUPS certainly does.
My suggestion to the name of this alternative is "print" which should point to the command used to print (ex.: /usr/bin/lpr)
That name won't work. We already have a "print" command, part of the mime-support package.
