He can do that without even being a co-maintainer. He just needs to
provide patches. What some of us in the gnome team are unsatisfied
with are the lack of solution to sometimes small problems that greatly
annoy users, like, for example, gdm defaulting for lots of time to not
including the system menu by default or gdm not being able to deal
with the default locale configured for the system.

These are easy to fix for those who know the init stuff (they can always
edit /etc/init.d/gdm and have it export LANG, or edit /etc/gdm/gdm.conf
to have the system menu appear), but this kind of thing sux for beginners
and desktop users.
