Dunno, did you google? 

Autodesk publishes the format:

 http://www.autodesk.com/techpubs/autocad/acad2000/dxf/index.htm

and this page shows that my memory doesn't serve me well (it's 
Drawing Interchange File) and DXF was extended quite a bit since
I worked with it.

On an up to date sarge:

% apt-cache search DXF
admesh - a tool for processing triangulated solid meshes
dime - DXF Import, Manipulation, and Export programs.
libdime - DXF Import, Manipulation, and Export library.
libdime-dev - DXF Import, Manipulation, and Export library - devel
libdime-doc - DXF Import, Manipulation, and Export library - devel
qcad - a professional CAD System

Quite a bit to try :)
