I think that if we assume that "everyone that installs Debian is a Unix
admin in the traditional sense", we are missing out on a large number of
people. We give people many tools that do things that they could do
with a shell -- Nautilus and Konqueror to name two.
Just because you throw Debian on a machine and know the root password
does not mean that you know how to do shell scripting.
Moreover, I can think of plenty situations in a home or small business
-- where shell scripting may not be understood -- where it could be good
to keep two machines more or less in sync. For instance, if you have a
machine in the home office and another upstairs.
Now, whether or not there is demand for this, I don't know... My point
is that the argument that "any shell programmer could do this trivially"
is not a good one, because not everyone is a programmer, much less a
shell programmer.
