Do we have to stay backwards-compatible in unreleased (at least
officially) software? Seems like consciously crippling it before
releasing it.

huh? they would try to install libunwind you mean? And that would
fail exactly why? Is there another list of packages to install in
d-i than the one debootstrap uses?
