"Id est" is a Latin expression, and "i.e." is an abbreviation for it.
But it is normally *pronounced*, by English speakers in an English
context, the same way they say "that is". Which is what I said.
If you want to get into a Latin pissing contest with me, you are
extremely likely to lose. My point is about *English* usage.
For what it's worth, the more usual *Latin* phrase is actually "hoc
est"!
The ideographic status of "i.e." and "e.g." (in *English*) have well
been demonstrated by asking unprepped native speakers to read text
aloud and seeing what they actually say.
