from cooperation, at least in my view.

  It's not just the installer, although that would be a nice start; a
lot of other software would benefit from more hardware awareness.  It
certainly doesn't hurt to have 50 ways to detect hardware, but at the
moment that'll get you your kernel modules loaded and not much else
AFAICS.
