[announce] Lintian 1.23.0

Hi all,

Since yesterday, a Lintian 1.23.0 is available[1] from sid. This new
version features a lot of new tests for all kinds of things that could
go wrong with packaging. It was the result of more than a month worth of
coding by the Lintian maintainers, and finalizing for release.

Compared to three months ago, Lintian has had major improvements, and
I'd like to hilight some of them here. For the full changes, read the
changelog[2].

- With the most recent three uploads, a large amount of false positives
are now fixed. There might still be false positives: some tests are
based on heuristics and thus can fail. Please file bugreports if you
think a test is triggered too easily, we will try to fix things
promptly, because lintian will only remain useful if it doesn't
  give false positives too easily.
- lintian has now better override support, overrides for tests in the
source package can now be overridden in
  ./debian/source.lintian-overrides
- udeb support: to help the debian-boot team, .udeb packages are now
  also checked for common mistakes
- There are checks for doing NMU's and QA uploads properly. For example,
you will be warned if you're going to do an upload that katie will
think is a NMU, but you didn't provide a NMU version number or noted
that you are NMU'ing in the changelog. Also accidental native
  packaging is detected.
- (fixed in 1.22.11 or 1.22.12)
+ Debconf is now checked for correct po-debconf usage
+ The menu files checks are much stricter now

We hope lintian will continue to be a useful package-checker providing
an easy way to check for common mistakes and oversights. If you have any
idea of something that could be checked automatically, a common mistake
you notice in packages, feel free to file a wishlist bug.

Note: http://lintian.debian.org is still running an old lintian version,
there is work going on to fix that, but please be patient.
