The value with most modern fonts is *not* the bitmap (and they aren't
bitmaps any more, but a set of vectors) but the manual, automatic
"programs" that provide the hints. There are actual programs in
TrueType fonts, you know. They may be rather simple programs, but so
are are most firmware when compared with the full Linux kernel.
Other folks have also pointed out that with many logos --- including
the Linux penguin logo, it's not just the bitmap, but the multiple
layers that were used in gimp that are really the true "source".
