In fact, policy forbids configuration files generated by maintainer scripts to be conffiles. Policy 10.7.3 says that, in configuration files, "local changes must be preserved during a package upgrade". But later on, it states that maintainer scripts "must not overwrite or otherwise mangle the user's configuration without asking". I wonder, is the user considered asked if he or she has set the debconf priority high enough to not see the question? -- Pelle
