I believe part of the problem here is that normal Debian kernels don't include
the boot framebuffer (with the penguin), so the boot messages are huge and wrap
around to multiple lines, making the whole thing look like a jumbled mess.

2.4.18-bf2.4 does, so I have that to boot at 1280x1024 or so. Much nicer.
