The bug is #161593.
Appearantly, a fix had already been committed to CVS and then reverted
because it had not been determined whether "debs are ar files" actually
means "debs are ar files as those produced by the debian-supplied ar".

Good luck for your bug, but don't be disappointed if it suffers the same
fate.
