Yes - for now. Certain parts of apt-build have undergone a major rewrite, but 
it is still using gcc/g++ wrappers. 

I agree with you - support for this on the package level would be optimal, but 
there are many thousands of packages to modify. Perhaps if support for this 
builds and people are, ah, encouraged to add this support to their rules then 
this would not be *as* necessary. Perhaps the "USE" (or optional.flags as 
they are currently called) could also be directly integrated into the rules 
file as well. If you build it, they will come..... ;-)
