This is what my gateway does, as it's the only way to reliably gate
email to usenet. The message mentioned by the first poster was sent
directly to the list instead of being posted to the newsgroup. This is
not supported (and I cannot prevent this...) and the obvious result is
breaking threading.
The user needs to be fixed, not the gateway.
