on top of that i really liked the idea that someone else had to
optionally hide all packages that a user wouldn't want to install
directly, but rather through a dependency. this would include almost all
non-dev library packages as well as most -common and -base.

the problem with this is that i can't see how this could be decided
automatically, so the maintainer would have to specify it.
