Bug#181124: general: install dselect with gnome front-end, then remove gnome, dselect fails

Package: general
Version: unavailable; reported 2003-02-15
Severity: normal

-- System Information:
Debian Release: 3.0
Architecture: i386
Kernel: Linux highfield 2.5.3 #8 Sun Dec 15 21:03:09 GMT 2002 i686
Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C

This is not a "normal" severity it is a show-stopper severity
for ordinary users.

installing dselect with the gnome front-end followed by then
removing gnome results in dpkg, and apt, and dselect all failing
to be able to configure any packages end of story.

a single error in installing then subsequently makes it impossible
to recover using ANY method, e.g. apt-get -f install, and things
get into a totally unusable state.

this is very daft: what should happen is that the dpkg / dselect
configuration files should fall back to using the console front-end
when gnome is removed.

there are some broken dependencies somewhere in dselect itself
that need to be sorted out.
