Why is it so important to use the Debian package? If it's a single
system you can as well just download the upstream source and compile it.
And if it's a multi-system installation it doesn't really matter if you
have to work a bit with the package does it? It'll probably save you
time anyway.

Use the upstream flexibility, compile it from his source.
