This is not entirely correct, because it depends on the version of ION
you are using. As the package ion-devel hit unstable a few days ago,
this ist already apt-getable. If you take this and add
transparent_background TRUE
to your ~/.ion-devel/draw.conf, the root window is visible in all empty
frames (and all "empty" spaces in used frames for non-resizable windows
like xmms)
