debian users can do that. so they have all the benefits of debian and
the "optimisation" ability of gentoo.
look at the pentium-builder and apt-build packages for details.
they had this ability (to download debianised source and build optimised
binaries) even before tools like these existed.
IMO, the fact that very few of our users do this is evidence that it's
really not a high priority for them.
