IIRC the Hurders were annoyed with wanna-build as well, so they wrote
turtle, in perl.  http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/turtle/  Not
sure about the status of it and whether it's usable but maybe it could
be a starting point?

This looks nice. I may try it for autobuilding freebsd-i386. Is there a reason why it hasn't been packaged and uploaded?
