Am I the only one considering autoconf broken because of this?

I thought one of the reasons for using autoconf was that the user (of
autoconf---that is upstream) didn't have to know about all the
architectures out there.

Wouldn't it had been better if there were some way for the operating
system to provide these informations to configure instead of demanding
that the upstream should provide them. Most of the time I would guess
the OS could do a much better job telling configure how it worked.
