I'm using the default theme that comes with Debian and the same problem
occurs in gfontsel (though it doesn't print those messages, it is still
impossible to select a font that the filter offers.)

As usual with Gnome, there is no useful documentation.  All I can find
is stuff about how to use the tools, not how to configure them
underneath.  It is a Microsoft level of documentation. :-<
