Long-term, archive size is going to cause us to lose mirrors.

While I have no particular interest to participate in this discussion, I
have to jump in here for a slight correction -- archive size is already
causing more and more mirrors to drop out or severely limit what they
mirror.

In the interest of corrections, I'd like to point out that the silly little jokes and other cruft in the archive don't do squat about its size. I doubt this package could count for more than 3MB of archive size in total.

What makes the archive big is big packages. And big packages are usually important. Take xserver-xfree86 for example. At maybe 30MB per architecure, that eats over half a gig.

What makes the archive really big is the number of architectures Debian supports. If you want to constrain archive growth, start killing architectures.

Arguing about tiny packages bloating the archive while adding several new architectures is, well, a farce. I seriously doubt that if we eliminated all the packages that are of questionable utility, it'd make more than 10% difference in archive size. Actually, I'd be surprised if it made that much[0].
