"noapic" doesn't work after all. I thought that's what I'd done to fix
it, but in fact I'm running a 2.4.19-pre kernel, which says this:
Dell Latitude with broken BIOS detected. Refusing to enable the local
APIC.
So it wasn't "noapic" that fixed my problem, it was 2.4.19; the only
workaround for 2.4.pre19 is probably to compile without local apic
support.
