Bug#136225: general: GDM unable to start Gnome session
Package: general
Version: 20020228
Severity: grave
-- System Information
Debian Release: 3.0
Kernel Version: Linux halkuon 2.4.17 #7 Fri Feb 22 11:01:40 NZDT 2002 i686 unknown
After doing a very recent 'apt-get dist-upgrade' from the official
unstable package site, GDM is unable to start a Gnome session. After
entering the user password and hitting enter, the screen flashes black,
and then it drops back out to the GDM login screen. I have had this
problem before and it was due to a missing gnome-session package. Now, I
noticed that the most recent dist-upgrade REMOVED gnome-session (as well
as some others such as gnome-panel) and who knows what it replaced with
it.
This bug has rendered Gnome completely unusable.
