Symlinks in CVS trees

Can anyone help with this one?

tetex-* has symlinks in the upstream source tree. CVS doesn't like
symlinks :-/ Using the -e/-o commands in the CVSROOT/modules file to
have a script create the symlinks on export/checkout works fine if the
CVSROOT is on a local machine, but if it's a remote machine, then any
scripts are executed on the server, not the client.

So does anyone have any suggestions as how to handle this with CVS?
(And please don't say "use a different system" at this point ;-)

Thanks!

   Julian
