I'm have same the problem. I fixed it temporarily with this:

# echo /sbin/modprobe > /proc/sys/kernel/modprobe

Bug #132533 gave this hint. Anyone know why automatic loading of
modules is broken?

I have Sid with Linux 2.4.17 i386 SMP (self compiled, worked fine
before).
