Anything but in /opt.  Some large multiuser/multimachine/multiplatform
unix sites use /opt for many reasons outside of package management, thus
causing a namespace conflict I would love to avoid.  We use /opt as a
general platform-specific nfs-mount with some random stuff on it.  We
put most of the non-free software and some free software in /soft with
the users using some sort of envrionment management system (Modules
3.1.1).  But yeah, in general, /opt is a nice place to start causing
really bad namespace collisions.
