As someone else mentioned, dpkg-scanpackages and dpkg-scansources (in the
dpkg-dev package) are the usual way, but recent versions of apt include a tool
called apt-ftparchive (in the apt-utils package) which gives a higher-level
interface to these tools, which might make things easier.
