I had this problem a few months ago. Not sure if it was the same cause.
In my case something had screwed up the file:
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/fonts.alias
which is where the "fixed" alias is AFAIK.
I don't honestly recall which package was responsible for creating this
alias. I *think* I reinstalled xfs and this fixed it.
Sorry that I can't remember any more though, it was a while ago.
