I would say that a good reason is granularity: having separate groups
allows more fine-grained control over what permissions are given.
UNIX permissions are pretty rough as such things go; I think having
more flexibility in delegating out permissions is a good thing.

And please don't send HTML emails, most people will just delete them
here. It's rude to people who don't have HTML email readers (such
as myself), and don't care to fire up another process just to read
a single message, especially when they don't know the person.
