Sponsorship is a pragmatic concession to the fact that an NM process that
includes proper checks (such as the identity check) will always take time, and
this is time during which Debian is losing out on the skills and resources the
NM has to offer.

I would personally like to see the sponsorship process refined, but not
discarded; there are many cases where sponsorship can still be a useful
interim solution, even with a properly functioning NM process.
