Yes. The exact number of people "permanently locked out of their only
machines" is,...

zero.

(Okay, that's based on the assumption that every boot loader allows
the passing of the option "single" or "init=/bin/sh". If not, then the
number becomes "equal to those using an irresponsibly incapable boot
loader" :-().

In the meantime, chill. Yes, it's a bad bug. Sam did the best he could
to minimize it, though. And I think you have a belief in the reliability
of alpha/beta releases of commercially developed software that is not
born out of experience.
