X colors changing?

I'm really bemused.  I've just upgraded from 4.0.3-3 to -4 of the X
suite of packages, and suddenly many of the standard colours I use are
no longer available.  For example:

polya:~ $ xsetroot -solid darkgreen
xsetroot:  unable to allocate color for "darkgreen"

And suddenly my xterm colours have significantly changed, as have my
window manager colours.

I'm running at 8bpp on a laptop (more details available if needed).

Anyone have any ideas what might have happened?
