On a related note, to edit config files, you don't have to start emacs
as root, if that's a little disconcerning to you. Just
apt-get install tramp (contained in recent unstable dists, at least),
and have emacs do the sudoing work (hint: su and sudo are multi-method
things).

Tramp also knows how to handle "remote" version-controlled files (and
thus, runs the rcs or cvs etc. as the user to whom the files belong
automatically).
