First, why are you starting X as root?  If that's really what you want to do,
is /usr/bin/X11 is root's path?  That's where the X binary lives.

In the current version of xbase-clients (4.0.2-13),
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xserverrc uses the full path /usr/bin/X11/X, perhaps
to avoid problems like this.
