Actually, it's got nothing to do with SMTP, just with broken programs
using the broken mbox mailbox format. Since SMTP has been defined well
in this regard, it's quite insane to require mail user agents (or mail
users!) to worry about a badly defined mail folder format, which has
nothing to do with transporting mail. Or list processing. The fact that it
happens with Debian mailing lists should be considered a bug (not a very
important one though, given that it happens rather rarely in practice).
