Are you sure the files you're deleting isn't in use by any process?
Try "fuser <file>" before deleting files.

Do you use df as ordinary user or as root. About 5% of the space is
reserved for root.
Do you use "apt-get clean" regulary? I wasted a lot of space on apt's
cache.
