i found a less stupid test too, rpcinfo -[ut] host 100024

that checks whether statd is ready and waiting on host, when the
connecting host is not listed in /etc/hosts.allow (with a ALL: ALL
policy in .deny) i get a RPC Authorization failed or some such error.
when the host is listed you get a `ready and waiting' message.  

so statd in woody does support tcpwrappers, as does mountd (mountd in
potato too).  lockd, and quotad do NOT however.
