ITP Asterisk

>From the Asterisk website at:
http://www.asteriskpbx.org

Asterisk is an Open Source Private Branch Exchange (PBX) and
general telephony toolkit which runs on the Linux operating system. It
is, fundamentally, a kind of middleware, between Internet and
telephony channels, like (Voice over IP, Voice over Frame Relay,
etc.) and telephony and Internet applications (like voicemail, phone
directories, call parking, calling cards, etc). Asterisk provides a
number of API's that make its functionality. For more information on the
API's, click on "Architecture" on the left hand side.

Asterisk supports a flexible and extensible channel API, allowing any number
of real hardware or software interfaces. Currently, the best implemented API
is the Voice over Frame Relay protocol used by the Adtran Atlas. This
interface was chosen as the initial platform because it provides easy access
to other technologies, like ISDN, PRI, T1, and POTS through the Atlas itself.
The Quicknet Internet PhoneJack and Quicknet Internet LineJack are both
supported. Also, a channel backend for Lucent based Winmodems is in the works.

Asterisk is covered by the GNU GPL but contains code licensed under BSD
styles licenses (mainly the codecs).
