Re: popular unpackaged apps (with descriptions)



Pruned the list back a bit, remove the ones mentioned by others, checked
agianst ITP (should have done this first time) and found a few more
myself to remove.
I cross checked with freshmeat and they some dont look to be very
popular their, i guess ranking by hits isnt a very good guide.

So here is a reduced list with descriptions to see if it might jog
anyones memory.


Freashmeat descriptions.

knapster
Knapster is a Linux KDE client of Napster, the MP3 download utility. It
supports most of the napster client operations such as searching by
songname/band, messaging, chat channels, downloads and uploads, and an
mp3 library.

WebMail
WebMail is a WWW mail application that allows users to manage IMAP or
POP3 mailboxes via an easy-to-use
WWW-interface. It may be used, for example, to give users access to
their mailboxes from anywhere in the
world. It is written in Java and should run at least on the most popular
Unix platforms. WebMail can run on its own HTTP server (users just have
to point their browser to the configured server and port) or can be run
as a Java Servlet. On the clientside, only a frames-capable browser is
needed, no Javascript or Java.

KVIrc
KVirc is a Visual Internet Relay Chat Client based on the Qt library.
Features include a MDI user interface, drag & drop, built-in scripting
language (aliases, popups and events), customizable backgrounds and
colours, DCC (chat, send with resume, voice), CTCP functions, mIRC
colour support with preview, notify list, online help and configurable
logging.

KisoCD
KisoCD is a tool that assists you in creating and copying ISO CD-ROMs.
It helps you to compose the contents of the CD while the work itself is
done by mkisofs and cdrecord. It supports very easy creation of bootable
and multisession CDs.

Etherboot

Etherboot is a free software package for making boot ROMS for booting
Linux and other operating systems on x86 PCs over a network using
Internet Protocols, i.e. bootp/DHCP and tftp.

sniffer
sniffer is a multi-threaded packet sniffer which prints information
about some user space protocols to a file and displays some network
stats on the screen.

KGateway
KGateway is a frontend to configure IPChains & IPMasquerade. It is
develop using Python, Qt, and KDE libraries.You can configure firewalls,
In/Out/Forward rules, and IP Masquerading using an easy GUI interface.
KGateway detects your language configuration and KDE enviroment, and
installs nicely into KDE Network options.

arianne rpg
Arianne is a virtual world. It is a massively multiplayer role playing
game you access through an Internet connection. You choose your own
virtual life and immerse yourself into a huge, wild new world, where you
have an unprecedented degree of freedom to shape your own destiny.

radiodj
rdj is a GTK+ radio interface for bttv video devices with radio tuners.
Scanning, station editing, using devices radio0-3, setting a default
station, and having unlimited stations are fully supported. Also, you
can start your favorite television app and mixer from it.

Sitback
Sitback is a backup system for entry-level and local systems. It knows
how to handle archives on disk, SCSI tapes, magnetic tapes, floppy
disks, zip disks, etc. It can be configured to run automated backups as
a daemon and can produce printed reports so office staff can check
whether the backup is ok or not. Sitback can also be used directly from
the console to do backups when you need it, and can create multiple
volumes.

X Northern Captain
X Northern Captain is a file manager for X Windows. XNC has the same
ideology as Norton Commander but also many additional and specific
functions including a Virtual File System with support for tar, zip,
rar, rpm, deb, bzip2, and lha archives, FTP support, built-in xterminal,
viewer for JPEG, GIF, BMP, TGA, XPM, and XBM formats, an editor, users
menu, extensions association, bookmarks for frequently used directories,
and more.

CoreLinux++
CoreLinux++ is an initiative to normalize methods and conventions for
OOA/OOD/C++ development for Linux, materialized in a set of Open Source
C++ class libraries to support common patterns and frameworks and
exploit the C++ standards.

WebHand
WebHand is an X11 HTML editor with dialog-driven insertion of tags and
built-in previewer. It features syntax highlighting, tags hierarchy
checking, and HTML 4.0 warnings. It is written to avoid unnecessary code
and to facilitate full use of HTML syntax.

SmIRC
SmIRC is an X11R6 IRC client, based on the Motif widget set. SmIRC has
most of the functionality expected from an IRC client. Only DCC is
missing. Everything else usually expected from an IRC client is
included.

Moonshine
Moonshine is an application development tool for Linux that supports a
wide varity of languages. It is designed in a modular fashion so that
specific language support is not built directly into the application but
into modules. The application provides a graphical file viewer, a
configurable text editor, and a help engine. The individual modules
provide icons, menus, help files, context highlighting rules for text,
and utilities specific to the module.

Java Napster
JNapster is a Napster client implemented in Java. It allows you to
download MP3s over the Internet. It provides a GUI similar to that of
the Napster Windows client and has some handy features the original
doesn't have: It gets server lists directly from napigator.com and logs
you into as many Napster servers as you want, which you can query in
parallel.
(requires JDK 1.2)

rc.firewall
RCF (aka rc.firewall) is an ipchains-based firewall with extensive
support for network services (IPSec, VTUN, NFS, SMB, Napster, Proxies,
etc.), masquerading, port forwarding (including network games), and IP
accounting. All services are self-contained modules which can be
prioritized and installed easily. Protections include spoofing, stuffed
routing/masqerading, DoS, smurf attacks, outgoing port scans, and much
more. RCF also supports multiple private and public interfaces with
unique rules for each interface/service; masqed De-Militarized Zones
(DMZs) are thus supported.

kruiser
Kruiser, formerly known as KExplorer, is a file manager inspired by
another commercial well-known explorer, but which implements many
original features. The interface is user-friendly, intuitive, and highly
configurable. Currently supported are browsing, file operations (copy,
move, opening, editing), (un)mounting external devices, FTP support
(browsing, downloading and uploading), SMB support (with  smbmount), MDI
support, KDE mime types, and network neighborhood support.

gnome-ppp (is this the same as gpppon)
Gnome-PPP is a GUI PPP dialup networking utility for the GNOME desktop
project. Some of its features are
multiple account management, PAP/CHAP support, cycling through multiple
phone numbers, and optional
dialing through a command-line interface for scripting.

Caitoo
Caitoo (formerly known as KGet) is a download manager similar to
Go!zilla(tm) or GetRight Download(tm). It keeps all your downloads in
one dialog and you can add and remove transfers. Transfers can be
paused, resumed, queued or scheduled. Dialogs display info about status
of transfers - progress, size, speed and remaining time. Program
supports drag & drop from KDE applications and Netscape.

firestarter
Firestarter is a complete firewalling tool for Linux. Use the firewall
creation wizard to create a basic firewall, then streamline it further
using the dynamic rule modifiers. Open and close ports with a few
clicks, or stealth your services giving access only to a select few.
Watch the real-time hit monitor as attackers probe your machine for open
ports. Firestarter is made for GNOME.

cd-tux
CD-Tux is a frontend for cdrecord,mkisofs,cdda2wav,mpg123 and sox that
allows for simple cd-creation on the console. It is based on the ncurses
library, has full colour and an intuitive interface. Full featured with
support for multiple audio types mixed-mode cd's predefined tracks and
much more. It is also by far the most resource economicall cd-writing
frontend available meaning a bare minimum of disk will ever be wasted.
Currently in late alpha it still lacks some of it's intended
functionalities. It comes with cdtuxsetup a program used for configuring
the program to your system with least possible hassle.

vppp
Vppp is a graphical interface to pppd , allowing to configure
connections to different Internet providers, to launch and stop and also
view the state of these connections. Vppp is very easy to use , it is a
multilingual application with in line manual.

webmaker
WebMaker is a GUI HTML Editor for Unix. Main features include a nice GUI
interface, menus, toolbar and dialogs for tag editing, multiple windows
support, HTML 4.0 support, color syntax highlighting, preview with
external browser, ability to filter editor content through any external
program that supports stdin/stdout and KDE integration.
