the thing that you are not telling us here is that what kernel is 'scrooge'
running on?

i got the same problem while upgrading to 2.4.0 which caused lockd to fail, you
have two choices.. the first one (and not really a fun one if you have
/var/mail mounted over the network) is to remove lockd from the client
machine.. this will make the locking fail silently to the program. the other
one, which applies on 2.4.0 and 2.3.0 (i think) is to run nfs-server-kernel
instead of nfs-user-server

the problem in any case is that rpc.lockd fails to start.
