Programs that parse other programs' output e.g. Emacs dired mode



I have noticeed that the recent libc6 2.2 has more translations for words, that
setting the locale makes almost everything appear in that language.

However, this is breaking some software.

Should we have any guideline ?

For example, my experience today was that dired in woody does not work
when locale is set to ja_JP.eucJP, because it doesn't understand the
date written in Japanese. (dired uses "ls -al" AFAIK)
It works when locale is set to "C".
