Nate, you are a genius!! I changed /etc/fstab to mount /usr before
/usr/local and it indeed fixed my problem:

ssahmed@viper:~$ df -ah

/dev/hda7             1.8G  164k  1.7G   0% /home
/dev/hda10            372M  196M  157M  56% /var
/dev/hda11            296M   17k  281M   0% /tmp

I had posted about this problem not too long ago, but only got a couple
of responses and none of them mentioned anything about mounting order.
