sounds like the problem will solve itself before woody gets released. in
the meantime, maybe make-kpkg should:

a) check if it's running on an i386 machine
b) check for the existence of /usr/bin/as86
c) check if the kernel version being compiled is < 2.3 (i'm assuming that
   2.3 doesn't need bin86 either)
d) print a message advising the user to install bin86 if it's needed
   or optionally offer to run "apt-get install bin86"
